When you feel the new Flex Performance Merlin Long Distance Driver leave your hand, one tends to believe there’s wizardry at play.  Daredevil Discs’ new member to the flock, the Merlin, is a swift and fierce flier, scanning for greens and chains in pursuit of its prey. The slightly understable release allows for breakneck maneuvers around obstacles, while its rated Speed 14 makes quick work over perilous terrain.

The merlin doesn't like hot weather, but it's a good alternative to a nuke.

I love the feel of Flex Performance plastic. And as long as it's not terribly hot outside, it's great. However, my experiences with flex performance lead me to believe that this plastic is very susceptible to significant stability variation with temperature. On a cool day (under 70F), my mammoth and timberwolf (both flex performance) fly true to their charts. On really hot days, my mammoth goes from about 9/4/-1/3 to about 9/4.5/-2/2. I wrote a follow up review on my "beat" mammoth, but I think it was a function of both things because on cooler days, my mammoth starts to play more like its old self.

That said, I tested out my new merlin on a sunny 95F day. I got the merlin to replace my nuke as my OS driver because I always feel like I'm fighting my nuke and losing the battle. I thought it would be a very predictable OS driver. I was wrong. You ever look at the flight chart for the sasquatch (it's rated 12/5/-5/1). This is the flight path I was getting with the merlin. Funny, my sasquatch never flies that way. Over and over, at that temperature, the merlin flew as understable as my thrashers.

I thought maybe I had a dud. But then I went out in the morning when it was in the low 70s. Same field. Same discs. Thrashers and cranks flew just as expected. Merlin was a bit stiffer and flew appreciably more stable, not like the flight chart indicates, but definitely closer than it is at high temps.

Bottom line: Daredevil's flight numbers are a bit extreme. At high temperatures, the merlin loses a lot of stability. In more comfortable weather, it is a stable disc. I think this is a function of flex performance plastic which gets noticeably softer in the hot weather. On the bright side, you get great grip with FP plastic, and it's my favorite plastic blend out there.

Update: I spent the morning with a stack of nukes and the merlin in 72F weather. They flew very similarly, except that the merlin has a little more fade. Thrown hard and with a flat release, the merlin turns more than the nuke, but it returns back. It is somewhat more forgiving on an anhyzer release than a nuke. I find it more comfortable to hold and throw than a nuke, so I will probably replace the nuke in my bag with the merlin, even though the merlin isn't exactly what I was hoping for.

I've tried several Daredevil drivers. They are VERY overstable. The Merlin is a bit more controllable than the others I've tried. It's not a disc to throw on a tight fairway. It fades hard to the left (I throw RHBH). Very good in the wind. The flex performance plastic is very comfortable to grip and appears very durable so far.

The flight numbers I've adjusted. It's not a 14 speed.

I'm still learning this disc, but so far so good.
